Law Students Assessing Lebanon High Mountain Areas Characteristics

The law students and the Human Rights Legal Department of La Sagesse University carried out a thorough survey across Lebanon's high mountains between April and September 2022.

The students have visited 61 villages that have lands located above 1.900 meters from Akkar in North Lebanon to Chebaa in the South, including Rachaya, West Bekaa, Baalbeck, and Hermel.

The surveys were conducted in collaboration with the relevant municipalities and various stakeholders.

The primary objective was to collect data and information about the characteristics of the high mountains, such as land ownership, type of protection, international designation, presence of a management plan, and presence of legal protection. At the same time, they covered the main strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of these areas.

The survey’s results will help in the update of the high mountains draft law.
